“Don’t be amazed if you see my eyes always wandering. In fact, this is my way of reading, and it is only in this way that reading proves fruitful to me. If a book truly interests me, I cannot follow it for more than a few lines before my mind, having seized on a thought that the text suggests to it, or a feeling, or a question, or an image, goes off on a tangent and springs from thought to thought, from image to image, in an itinerary of reasonings and fantasies that I feel the need to pursue to the end, moving away from the book until I have lost sight of it. The stimulus of reading is indispensable to me, and of meaty reading, even if, of every book, I manage to read no more than a few pages. But those few pages already enclose for me whole universes, which I can never exhaust.” ― Italo Calvino, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler

“Renowned author Dan Brown got out of his luxurious four-poster bed in his expensive $10 million house and paced the bedroom, using the feet located at the ends of his two legs to propel him forwards.”

My reviewer loved The Da Vinci Code but I could not get past the first chapter. This brilliant parody of Brown’s clunky prose style shows why.

The critics said his writing was clumsy, ungrammatical, repetitive and repetitive. They said it was full of unnecessary tautology. They said his prose was swamped in a sea of mixed metaphors. For some reason they found something funny in sentences such as “His eyes went white, like a shark about to attack.” They even say my books are packed with banal and superfluous description, thought the 5ft 9in man. He particularly hated it when they said his imagery was nonsensical. It made his insect eyes flash like a rocket.

I laughed at loud at the last sentence. Hoo boy.

This is a brilliant bit of mockery - very much a Private Eye type of thing.

"Who better to recruit than a librarian when you’re dealing with a fledgling dictatorship?"

“Who better to recruit than a librarian when you’re dealing with a fledgling dictatorship?”

- Stephen King, Under the Dome

Sea Serpent Metal Art Bookends Free USA by KnobCreekMetalArts...

Sea Serpent Metal Art Bookends Free USA by KnobCreekMetalArts - they also have lots of other great bookend ideas

1090739 words, 3363 pages, 199 chapters, 7 books - 1 story -...

1090739 words, 3363 pages, 199 chapters, 7 books - 1 story - Harry Potter (via Harry Potter Obsession / .)

Huxley vs Orwell

Huxley vs Orwell

The Public Library: Historic Artifact or Adaptive Success? |...

The Public Library: Historic Artifact or Adaptive Success? | CityTownInfo.com

The best books integrate queer teens’ coming-of-age stories into the rich and varied spectrum of human experience.

A corollary of this rule is that a good coming-out novel knows its characters are more than their sexual or gender identity. Queer kids are more than just their designated letter of the alphabet, and their stories—coming out and otherwise—should reflect that. As the protagonist of Cris Beam’s I Am J puts it: “Being trans wasn’t special, and yet it was. It was just good and bad and interesting and…very human, like anything else.”
”

- What Makes a Good YA Coming Out Novel? posted at The Horn.

mentalflossr:
